I’m trying to keep an eye on my teen’s whereabouts after school, but I’m not sure if I can actually pull up a history of where they’ve been without them knowing. I’ve heard something about iCloud or Family Sharing maybe working, but the steps I found online seem outdated or sketchy. Has anyone here managed to view past locations remotely, and if so, does it require the phone to be unlocked or anything special?
Apple locks down past location data on purpose, so you can’t pull a remote history log—Family Sharing only shows live location, and the iPhone’s built-in “Significant Locations” feature is encrypted and needs their passcode right on the device to view. If you actually want a location history, you’ll need physical access once to either install a legitimate parental control app with GPS logging or configure an MDM profile, since anything advertising fully remote, invisible location tracking on modern iOS is just marketing vaporware.

That makes sense - I’ve been confused about this too. The whole Apple location sharing thing seems like it changed a few times and I can’t tell what’s actually current anymore. I was also wondering if it leaves any trace on the other person’s phone or if it’s truly hidden.
